The English Chemist Joseph Priestley gave it the name rubber in 1770 when he observed it could be utilized to rub out pencil marks. Its major commercial achievements came only after the vulcanization system was invented by Charles Goodyear in 1839. Pure rubber is the only non-synthetic rubber.
